Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they attacked King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with ballistic missiles on Thursday, their third claimed strike on the airport this week. Explosions were heard across the Saudi capital, including a large blast at the airport, according to an Associated Press account cited by The Indian Express.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the missiles hit their target and disrupted airport operations. Middle East Eye, citing AFP sources briefed on the incident, reported that at least one aircraft was severely damaged, while another source said three planes were hit. Saudi authorities did not immediately comment on Thursday’s claim.
France 24 reported that Saudi authorities said earlier Houthi attacks on airports in Riyadh and Abha this week killed three people and wounded 36. Deutsche Welle separately reported the Houthis’ claim that Thursday’s Riyadh strike killed three people and injured several others.
Air India, Air India Express and IndiGo suspended flights to and from Riyadh following reports of the attack. An Air India flight from Delhi turned back after about two hours in the air, while Akasa Air canceled two flights between Kochi and Riyadh.
The attacks came as fighting intensified in Yemen. The Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed 82 Houthi military targets in Saada, Marib, Al Jawf and Al Hudaydah, while Yemen’s internationally recognized government said its forces had retaken strategic areas along the Red Sea coast. Those battlefield claims were not independently verified.
