Yemeni government-aligned forces launched a multi-front offensive this week against the Iran-backed Houthis, reporting gains near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and in Taiz and Marib provinces. The Saudi-backed government said its forces had retaken Mokha and other coastal positions and begun an operation aimed at eventually recapturing Sanaa.
The battlefield claims remained disputed. The Houthis denied losing Mokha or other ground, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the extent of the government advances. By Wednesday, the Institute for the Study of War said evidence indicated that Houthi forces had halted government-aligned advances on the coastal plain. The Houthis also appeared to be advancing toward Taiz, while government forces continued operations around Al-Wazi’iyah and other nearby positions.
Reuters verified videos posted by government forces that showed armored vehicles running over opposing fighters near Bab el-Mandeb, including unarmed men with their hands raised. The Houthis accused the Saudi-backed forces of war crimes. The Saudi-led coalition and the Giants Brigade did not immediately comment, while the Homeland Shield Forces instructed troops to treat prisoners properly and follow legal and ethical standards.
The Houthis also attacked airports in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities said strikes on airports in Riyadh and Abha killed three people and injured dozens. An explosive strike at Aden airport forced a Cairo flight to divert.
The Indian Express, citing a New York Times report, said Pakistani fighter jets were participating in strikes against the Houthis after Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey activated a mutual-defense pact. Pakistan’s military declined to comment.
