An unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4 at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday, starting a fire and causing injuries, Saudi authorities said. The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said air defenses also intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile near the airport.
The strike came less than a day after a missile hit a passenger terminal at the same airport, killing at least 12 people and wounding more than 300. The National reported that the death toll later rose to 13 after an injured Indian citizen died. Operations at the airport were suspended, and Saudi authorities moved Riyadh schools online.
The Houthis said they had targeted the airport several times within 24 hours using ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. They also claimed attacks on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and two Saudi Aramco facilities, but Saudi authorities had not confirmed those claims. The group warned airlines, workers and passengers to avoid Saudi airports and airspace.
European Union and United Nations officials condemned Saturday’s attack. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it a “dangerous escalation,” while UN Secretary-General António Guterres said attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure must stop.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that Washington was considering whether to join Saudi military action against the Houthis. The Houthis said the attacks were retaliation for an offensive by Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces.
