King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was hit by an unidentified projectile on Sunday, causing a fire and injuries as authorities assessed damage and checked the safety of airport facilities, Saudi officials said. Air defenses also intercepted a cruise missile near the airport.
The attack followed a strike on Saturday that Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said killed 12 people and injured 309. The dead included four Saudis, two Bangladeshis and citizens of the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. India’s embassy said Sunday that an Indian citizen later died from injuries sustained in the attack. Pakistan’s prime minister said six Pakistani citizens were wounded, while Indonesia’s embassy reported no known Indonesian casualties, with checks continuing.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for four operations over the preceding 24 hours using ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. The group said it repeatedly targeted the Riyadh airport, as well as Dammam airport and two Saudi Aramco facilities. It warned airlines, airport workers and passengers to avoid Saudi airports and airspace, while saying airports in Mecca and Medina would not be targeted.
Riyadh airport remained temporarily closed Sunday for safety and structural inspections, and schools in the capital were moved online through the end of the week. The attacks drew condemnation from the UAE and other Arab governments, as well as U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
