Hurricane Isaias left at least four people dead and hundreds of thousands without power after striking Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 2 storm on Friday, according to Al Jazeera.

The hurricane had strengthened to Category 3 as it approached the coast, prompting states of emergency in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. Forecasts warned of destructive winds, life-threatening storm surge and high waves, while residents boarded windows, filled sandbags and stocked fuel ahead of landfall.

Isaias came ashore near Destin, Florida, before moving north into Alabama on Saturday with tropical-storm-force winds. It later weakened into a post-tropical cyclone and continued toward the Appalachians, with a risk of flash flooding in the mid-Atlantic.

Nearly 800,000 homes and businesses lost electricity at the peak of the storm. About 356,000 customers in southern Alabama and northwestern Florida remained without power by Sunday afternoon, PowerOutage.com data cited by Al Jazeera showed. Utility crews from Florida and more than two dozen other states were mobilized to restore service.

High winds tore the roof from a Pensacola motel and flattened a boathouse in Destin. Pensacola faced drinking-water shortages and a boil-water advisory after wells and other infrastructure were affected, while severe damage forced the indefinite closure of Pensacola International Airport. Fallen trees, downed power lines and flooding also disrupted travel, and officials closed all roads in Houston County, Alabama, until further notice.
