Hurricane Isaias left at least four people dead and hundreds of thousands without power after making landfall near Destin in northwestern Florida on Friday night as a Category 2 storm.
The National Hurricane Center said Isaias came ashore with sustained winds of about 105 mph (165 km/h), bringing heavy rain, damaging winds, storm surge and flash flooding to the Gulf Coast. The storm weakened rapidly over land and was classified as a post-tropical cyclone as it moved across southern Alabama, though forecasters warned that strong gusts and flooding could continue farther inland.
Local authorities said two people were killed when trees fell on homes in Florida and Alabama. A third person died from carbon monoxide poisoning after a generator was operated in a garage in Escambia County, Florida, while a fourth died in an Alabama traffic accident involving a fallen tree.
About 670,000 customers in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi remained without electricity around midday Saturday, according to PowerOutage.us figures cited by RTÉ. Coastal evacuations were ordered before landfall, and Florida, Alabama and Georgia declared states of emergency. Federal emergency declarations were also approved for Florida and Alabama.
Isaias was the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season. Hurricane warnings were discontinued Saturday as the system weakened, but officials continued to caution residents about flooding, downed trees and hazardous travel conditions.
