Pope Leo XIV resumed work from a Rome hospital on Thursday as he recovered from surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican said.
The 71-year-old pontiff met Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, a senior Vatican official responsible for much of the Holy See’s daily administration, at Gemelli Hospital. He also reviewed documents and celebrated Mass with other priests for a second day in a temporary chapel near his room.
Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora said post-operative tests remained within normal ranges and a chest X-ray showed good recovery of the operated lung. Leo underwent full-mobility physiotherapy and was carrying out daily activities independently. His recovery was “proceeding as expected,” they said.
The roughly 90-minute operation on Tuesday was completed without complications. Tests on the removed tissue confirmed adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. Doctors are awaiting further results to determine the cancer’s molecular characteristics, whether it spread beyond the removed lobe and whether additional treatment is required.
Leo is expected to remain hospitalized until at least October 20. A planned November 6-17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru remains on the schedule, although Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori said the dates could change depending on his recovery.
