Pope Leo XIV is recovering in Rome after surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung following a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, the Vatican said.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent the 90-minute operation at Gemelli University Hospital on Tuesday. The Vatican described the procedure as successful and said there were no complications. Leo was awake and resting in his room afterward, and the Vatican said Wednesday that he had spent a peaceful night. He is expected to remain hospitalized for several days and has cleared his schedule for at least a week.
Leo had told worshippers Sunday that a lung nodule had been detected at a “very early stage” and was localized. The cancer diagnosis, which had been suspected in preoperative tests, was confirmed during the operation, according to the Vatican.
It remains unclear whether the pope will need chemotherapy, radiation or other treatment. Medical specialists cited by several outlets said that decision would depend on factors including the tumor’s size and characteristics and whether it had spread to nearby lymph nodes. Further testing is underway.
Catholics, world leaders and senior cardinals offered prayers for Leo, who thanked well-wishers for their support. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was due to lead a Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday in the pope’s place, with special prayers for his health.
