Four Canadian service members were killed and dozens of others seriously injured after a fire broke out Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday.

Carney described the fire as one of the worst peacetime tragedies experienced by the Canadian Armed Forces on Canadian soil. Authorities have not announced its cause.

The Department of National Defence said the fire began at about 4 p.m. local time in the base’s training area. The Municipal District of Wainwright said high winds caused the blaze to spread rapidly and cross the base perimeter into the surrounding rural area. Military and civilian crews fought the fire through the night. By about 11 p.m., local officials said it was being held and that property and critical infrastructure had been protected. No evacuation order was issued.

Patients were transported to hospitals in Edmonton after healthcare facilities near the base became overwhelmed, according to CBC. Edmonton hospitals activated measures used for mass-casualty events.

The Canadian Armed Forces coordinated the emergency response with federal, provincial and local authorities. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is involved in the investigation.

CFB Wainwright, southeast of Edmonton, is one of Canada’s busiest military training facilities and regularly hosts exercises involving Canadian and allied personnel.
