At least four Canadian service members were killed and dozens of others seriously injured in a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday.

The fire broke out at about 4 p.m. Saturday in a training area while winds gusted up to 96 kilometres per hour. Military and civilian firefighters worked through the night, and air ambulances transported patients to hospitals in Edmonton, Wainwright, Calgary and Red Deer. Health authorities declared a mass-casualty event to coordinate the response.

Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies suffered by Canada’s armed forces on home soil. He ordered flags at federal buildings lowered to half-staff and said those affected came from military bases across the country.

CBC previously reported seven deaths, citing unnamed sources, but authorities said they would not confirm additional casualties before notifying relatives. Defence Minister David McGuinty planned to travel to the area for briefings.

The cause of the fire remained unknown. The Municipal District of Wainwright said high winds caused it to spread rapidly and cross the base fence into the surrounding district. No evacuation orders were issued, and officials said Sunday that the fire was not expected to expand beyond its current boundaries.

CFB Wainwright, one of Canada’s largest military bases, is about 210 kilometres east of Edmonton and houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre.
