US President Donald Trump endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, giving the longtime Israeli leader his “complete and total endorsement” ahead of parliamentary elections on October 27.
In a Truth Social post addressed to the Israeli public, Trump described Netanyahu as “strong, brave, and brilliant” and a “Great Warrior Prime Minister.” He praised Netanyahu’s leadership during the conflict with Iran and wrote that the Israeli leader “will never let you down.” Trump also suggested the United States could face a greater burden in confronting Iran if Netanyahu were not returned to office.
Netanyahu thanked Trump for his “tremendous support and the joint work,” adding in a post on X: “Together we will complete the mission!”
The endorsement came after Trump had recently avoided explicitly backing Netanyahu despite their long political alliance and Trump’s prominent role in earlier Likud election campaigns. CNN reported that relations between the two leaders have at times been strained over Israeli military actions and US-led diplomatic efforts.
Opinion polls cited by Deutsche Welle indicate that neither Netanyahu’s bloc nor the opposition currently has the 61 parliamentary seats needed to form a governing coalition. Israel’s prime minister is selected through coalition-building rather than a direct popular vote.
Gadi Eisenkot, Netanyahu’s main challenger, welcomed Trump’s contribution to Israeli security but said Israeli voters alone would choose the country’s next leader and that Washington would work with whichever government they elect.
