National Guard member, suspect wounded in shooting near U.S. Capitol
A National Guard member and a suspected gunman were wounded late Sunday in Washington, D.C., after Guard members attempted to intervene in a fight, police said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. in the Capitol Hill area. Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said National Guard members were inside a van when they saw a fight break out nearby. When a suspect allegedly produced a gun, the Guard members ordered him to put it down, according to Carroll.
Police said the suspect then pointed the weapon toward the Guard members, who opened fire. The suspect was shot in the leg, and one Guard member was also struck in the leg.
Both injured people were taken to area hospitals. Their wounds were not considered life-threatening, police said.
