Illinois authorities have charged a 19-year-old man over an alleged mass-shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in suburban Chicago.
Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine faces felony counts of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a rifle. A judge ordered him detained pending trial.
Police said a vehicle registered to Paporakis entered the parking lot of the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora shortly after noon on Sunday, October 11, and left less than 15 minutes later. Prosecutors allege that Paporakis was armed and intended to attack worshippers, but his rifle jammed. Authorities have said the precise intended location remains under investigation.
Two of Paporakis’s co-workers contacted police after receiving messages about the alleged plan. Prosecutors said he told a colleague that his weapon had jammed and that he intended to try again after repairing it. Officers arrested him later that day near his home.
A search of the home recovered an AR-style rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armour and items bearing Nazi or white-supremacist imagery, police said. Investigators also found an eight-page document attributed to Paporakis that expressed white-supremacist views and advocated violence against Indians and other minority groups.
The temple said it had increased security. India’s Ministry of External Affairs called the case a matter of deep concern and urged US authorities to investigate fully and take steps to prevent similar incidents.
