The UN World Food Programme said Monday that a funding shortage is forcing it to end monthly assistance for about 500,000 people in Gaza, reducing the number receiving food or cash support from 1.6 million to 1.1 million.
The remaining recipients will also receive less aid. Food rations are being halved, while monthly payments to 75,000 families will fall from 1,250 shekels to 750 shekels. The number of hot meals distributed each day to people unable to cook has dropped from 250,000 to 150,000, with some families in hard-to-reach areas receiving meals every other day.
The WFP estimates that 1.4 million people — about two-thirds of Gaza’s population — face crisis levels of food insecurity or worse, including roughly 200,000 in emergency conditions. The agency said the reductions reflect a lack of money rather than declining need or an inability to deliver supplies.
“This has been a lifeline,” WFP country director Shaun Hughes told AFP. “But now, rather than being able to sustain and scale up that assistance, we’re actually having to reduce it.”
The agency says it needs $450 million over the next six months to maintain critical operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Acting WFP executive director Carl Skau said assistance would be prioritized for those most in need, including sick people and children at risk of malnutrition.
