A Delhi court on Monday extended the judicial custody of Cockroach Janta Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka by two days, with their next hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
Delhi Police sought the extension after the two had spent five days in custody. Police argued that Das and Ranka could disrupt “peace and tranquility” if released, The Indian Express reported. The pair had been detained after entering Jantar Mantar with other campaign members, unfurling the national flag and raising slogans despite the area having been removed from Delhi’s list of designated protest sites.
Police allege that the group climbed over a locked gate to enter the site during protests concerning the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Cases were registered over alleged disobedience of a public servant’s order, trespass and criminal conspiracy.
CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh called the extension a “mockery of the justice system.” The party had previously accused authorities of deliberately prolonging the leaders’ bail proceedings and rejecting their sureties.
Separately, Delhi Police registered a criminal-intimidation case against unidentified persons over alleged threats sent to the special executive magistrate hearing the matter. CJP representatives questioned any connection between those messages and the custody proceedings.
