Israeli police arrested multiple suspects Monday while investigating weekend attacks in the occupied West Bank on U.S. photojournalist Heidi Levine and a delegation of European diplomats. Al Jazeera reported 10 arrests, while Middle East Eye reported eight. Police said those detained were suspected of violence, violating a closed military zone order and illegal construction, according to Al Jazeera.
Levine, a Washington Post photojournalist, said masked Israeli settlers attacked her Friday near Abu Falah as she covered Palestinians harvesting olives. She suffered broken ribs and vertebrae and underwent surgery for a severely injured finger, according to Al Jazeera. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called the assault a “despicable act of terror” and urged a full investigation, arrests and prosecution. He later described the arrests as “a very positive development.”
A day later, masked men carrying sticks attacked diplomats and other visitors near Taybeh after they joined Palestinian landowners harvesting olives. Guardian footage showed the moments before the assault, its aftermath and an attack on a vehicle carrying French Mayor Bernard Baudoux and others. France, Belgium and Poland called for action.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and the military blamed “Israeli rioters” for the diplomatic delegation’s attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned whether available images established the full sequence of events or individual responsibility, and said the circumstances of Levine’s attack remained unclear. Levine said she was “shocked and insulted” by his response.
