A six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed Saturday when a truck drove onto a field during a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, police said.
Ten people were hospitalized with traumatic injuries ranging from minor to severe, though none appeared life-threatening, Wichita police Capt. Aaron Moses said. The injured included five children — two five-year-olds, two eight-year-olds and a nine-year-old — and five adults. Another adult was hospitalized with a non-traumatic medical issue. The two people killed, both from McPherson, Kansas, were pronounced dead at the scene and were not related, police said.
Emergency calls began at about 3:25 p.m., and responders found the truck on a field at the west end of the complex. Police identified the driver as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. Two juveniles were in the truck with her, while another of her children was playing soccer elsewhere at the complex.
Police initially took the woman into custody. She was later released without charges pending toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the truck, according to a Sunday police update. Police Chief Joe Sullivan said investigators were still working to determine why the crash happened.
All events at the sports complex were canceled until further notice.
