China’s economy expanded 4.5% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, accelerating from 4.3% in the previous quarter and exceeding economists’ expectations, according to data released Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics.

Growth over the first nine months of the year was 4.6%, placing the world’s second-largest economy within the government’s full-year target range of 4.5% to 5%.

Exports, including strong shipments of semiconductors and other technology-related goods amid an artificial-intelligence investment boom, helped support the expansion. Industrial production rose 5.5% year on year in September, while retail sales increased 1.1%, up from a 0.4% gain in August.

Domestic conditions remained uneven. Fixed-asset investment contracted 7.2% during the first nine months of the year, while property investment fell 20.6%, according to The Irish Times. Weak household demand and the prolonged property downturn continued to weigh on growth despite the strength of exports.

The surveyed urban unemployment rate eased to 5.2% in September from 5.3% in August. Chinese authorities had introduced targeted support measures in the weeks before the data release, following an earlier emphasis on implementing existing policies.
