Kenya has confirmed four additional cases of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus, raising the country’s total to seven, the Ministry of Health said on Saturday. Three of the newly infected patients are health workers who treated Kenya’s first Ebola patient, while the fourth is one of his relatives.
The relative had been quarantined since October 6, according to the ministry. Kenya’s third case, confirmed a day earlier, involved a 65-year-old woman from the same family who also tested positive while in quarantine. The second patient, a 39-year-old male relative, was reported to be in stable condition.
Kenya’s first patient, a 40-year-old businessman, became ill in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before travelling through Uganda and flying to Nairobi on October 3. He was admitted to hospital and died on October 5. All subsequent cases have been linked to him.
The ministry said 128 of the first patient’s 130 identified contacts had been quarantined and maintained that there was no evidence of wider community transmission. Earlier contact-tracing figures showed that authorities had located 113 of 128 contacts, with five found outside Kenya.
The Kenyan cases are linked to an outbreak in the DRC involving the Bundibugyo strain. The DRC has reported more than 9,000 infections and 4,300 deaths since the outbreak was declared in May. There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this Ebola strain.
