Pope Leo spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday and called for a ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-held city in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, to permit humanitarian relief and civilian evacuations.
The Vatican said the pope expressed “deep concern about the grave humanitarian situation” in Oleshky and requested a pause in fighting to allow deliveries of food and medical assistance, as well as the voluntary and safe evacuation of civilians. Reuters reported that Putin agreed to cooperate with the pope’s appeal for aid to the city.
Residents of Oleshky have faced shortages of food and medicine while caught in fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
The pope made the appeal from a hospital, where he is recovering after surgery Tuesday to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung. The call came days after the operation and was disclosed by the Vatican on Friday evening.
