President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday creating a Women’s Health Division at the National Institutes of Health and a White House task force focused on women’s health.
The initiative, promoted by first lady Melania Trump following meetings with federal health officials, is intended to close research gaps, modernize care and accelerate the development of treatments. The order does not set specific funding goals, according to Fortune.
White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will lead the task force. Wiles recently announced that she is cancer-free after treatment for breast cancer.
The order calls for attention to maternal health, mental health and endometriosis, as well as conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, heart disease and stroke. The new NIH division will not replace the agency’s Office of Research on Women’s Health and is expected to have a broader mandate extending beyond research.
Melania Trump said she helped shape the order and task force in consultation with physicians, White House officials and Kennedy. She credited those discussions with highlighting the need to modernize women’s health care and speed the discovery of treatments and cures.
