The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Sunday in Cleveland, taking a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.
Drew Rasmussen allowed one run on four hits over seven innings, striking out six. Tampa Bay scored in each of the first three innings: Jonny DeLuca drew a bases-loaded walk in the first, Jonathan Aranda delivered an RBI single in the second and Liam Hicks singled home another run in the third.
Cleveland finished with five hits and scored its only run in the sixth. Guardians starter Parker Messick allowed two runs on five hits in two innings and took the loss.
The victory followed Tampa Bay’s 7-3 win in Game 4, when Aranda had three hits and drove in two runs, Yandy Díaz hit a two-run homer and Nick Martinez earned his first postseason win with 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. That result had tied the series at two games apiece.
Games 6 and, if necessary, 7 are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Rays need one more victory to reach the World Series for the first time since 2020.
