Eight people were killed and 15 injured after a minibus veered off the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and plunged into a 15-foot-deep drain in Rajasthan’s Kota district early Saturday, October 17.
The crash occurred at about 6 a.m. near pole number 384. Authorities suspect the driver may have become drowsy or fallen asleep, causing the vehicle to leave the eight-lane road. A passenger who survived the crash also said most occupants were asleep and believed the driver had dozed off.
Emergency crews launched rescue operations, but mud and water in the drain initially hindered efforts. Cranes were deployed to retrieve the damaged vehicle and reach people trapped inside.
Kota Rural Superintendent of Police Sujeet Shankar said the minibus carried about 23 passengers, most of them members of extended families from the Bhopal and Betul districts of Madhya Pradesh. The group was on a pilgrimage in Rajasthan and was travelling to the Khatu Shyamji temple.
The injured were taken to New Medical College Hospital and MBS Hospital. Hospital officials said patients received initial stabilisation, medical care and diagnostic testing, including CT scans. Eight of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. Authorities continued clearing the crash site and verifying passenger details.
