France imposed partial curfews in Paris and several other cities on Monday after cost-of-living demonstrations descended into widespread rioting, looting and clashes with police over the weekend.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu asked regional authorities to target transport hubs, prominent public sites and commercial districts. In Paris, a curfew was ordered from 11 p.m., while demonstrations were banned from 8 p.m. Curfews were also announced in cities including Lille and Lyon. Lecornu said the government was prepared to declare a state of emergency if needed.
About 500,000 people joined demonstrations across France on Saturday. Masked groups later attacked police, damaged or set fire to public buildings and looted shops. More than 2,500 people were arrested during the unrest, and nearly 1,000 security personnel were injured, according to reports carried by Dawn and the Taipei Times. Protesters were also injured.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered to resign after acknowledging that police had “lost control” in some cities and that authorities had failed to anticipate the scale of the violence. President Emmanuel Macron rejected the resignation, citing the need for continuity in law-enforcement leadership, while ordering new measures against rioters and an examination of intelligence and planning failures.
Protests continued Monday when students blocked access to the Louvre. Organizers have called for another round of demonstrations on Saturday.
