Egypt has pledged to provide Saudi Arabia with “all necessary and possible forms of support” to defend its security, territory, resources and Islamic holy sites as Houthi attacks on the kingdom intensify.
The commitment followed a meeting of Egypt’s National Defense Council chaired by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Sissi has asked parliament to authorize the military to assist Saudi Arabia if Riyadh formally requests help. No such request has been announced, and Egyptian officials have not specified what assistance could involve or how many troops might be deployed.
Under Egypt’s constitution, sending forces on a combat mission abroad requires approval from two-thirds of the 596-member House of Representatives. A parliamentary vote initially expected Sunday was delayed as discussions continued, with The National reporting that it was expected on Tuesday. Approval would give Sissi legal authority to deploy forces but would not trigger an automatic deployment.
The pledge comes after renewed fighting in Yemen and a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, including Riyadh’s international airport and facilities belonging to state oil company Saudi Aramco. The Houthis control Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and much of the country’s north.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said he discussed regional developments and the importance of de-escalation in a call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
