Israeli police arrested 10 people in the occupied West Bank following separate settler attacks on Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine and a European diplomatic delegation, police said.
Levine was injured while covering an attack by dozens of masked settlers on Palestinians harvesting olives in Abu Falah. She said attackers pushed her to the ground and repeatedly kicked her before Palestinian colleagues helped her escape. Palestinian medics said at least two people were taken to hospitals. The attackers also threw rocks and burned olive trees. Israeli forces later arrived and used tear gas; the military said personnel fired warning shots and acted against a person they believed posed a threat.
In a separate incident near Taybeh, settlers confronted vehicles carrying French, Belgian and Polish diplomats and officials visiting the predominantly Christian village. Witnesses said masked men surrounded a diplomatic vehicle and smashed a window. Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in France, said settlers knocked him down, kicked him and beat him with iron bars. He reported minor injuries.
Belgium condemned the attack, and Israeli police opened an investigation. Israel’s foreign minister also condemned the perpetrators as “rioters,” while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office warned against drawing conclusions before the facts were established.
Police said pre-dawn raids across the West Bank resulted in 10 arrests and the seizure of vehicles and potential evidence. Suspects were being investigated over the violent incidents and other alleged offenses, including breaching a closed military zone.
