A large Ukrainian drone attack struck St Petersburg and surrounding areas overnight into Sunday, igniting fires at oil facilities, damaging residential and commercial buildings and disrupting flights and electricity supplies, Russian officials said.
St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said one person was killed and at least five were injured. Firefighters responded to blazes at the St Petersburg Oil Terminal, the Ruchyi oil depot and industrial warehouses. Beglov said 12 apartment blocks and two houses were damaged, while operations at Pulkovo Airport were temporarily restricted.
Russian companies VK and Ozon said a data centre and a logistics hub were also hit. In the surrounding Leningrad region, Governor Alexander Drozdenko said roughly 20,000 people lost power after a substation was struck. Russian authorities reported shooting down about 145 drones around St Petersburg and more than 1,000 across Russia, occupied Crimea and the Black Sea, though those figures could not be independently verified.
The attack followed the collapse of an “energy ceasefire” announced by US President Donald Trump. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had struck Ukrainian energy, oil and gas facilities 76 times during the week after the announcement, leaving tens of thousands without electricity. Ukraine had briefly paused attacks on Russian oil infrastructure before resuming them.
Russia also continued attacks on Ukraine. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a Russian strike killed one person and injured two in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday night, damaging a medical facility and another building.
