Russian ballistic missile and drone attacks struck Kyiv and Ukraine’s energy network, killing at least three people across successive attacks and disrupting essential services, according to Ukrainian officials and news reports.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine received no advance warning from partner countries before the strikes, despite previously relying on Western intelligence to help detect incoming ballistic missiles. He said one barrage included 16 ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv and the surrounding region and damaged more than 10 energy facilities nationwide, leaving more than 500,000 people without electricity, heat or running water.
Zelenskyy said Russia’s main target was energy infrastructure, including Kyiv’s thermal power plant No. 4, and warned that Ukrainian intelligence indicated further launches were being prepared. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States continued to share intelligence with Kyiv.
The attacks came as Ukraine faced a severe shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles. Zelenskyy said Washington was supplying 12 interceptors a month—about one-quarter of the previous rate—and had approved only part of deliveries already financed through a NATO-coordinated purchasing program. He also said Ukraine had proposed halting attacks on Russian diesel infrastructure in exchange for additional Patriot missiles.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it targeted military and industrial sites, including facilities connected to drone and missile production and storage.
