Egypt pledged to provide Saudi Arabia with “all necessary and possible support” as the kingdom faced renewed drone and missile attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement, while Egypt’s parliament postponed a vote on authorising defensive military assistance.
Egypt’s National Defence Council, chaired by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, said Sunday that Cairo stood fully with Saudi Arabia in defending its security, territorial integrity, resources and Islamic holy sites. The presidency also said Egypt would intensify diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.
Sisi said Saturday that Egypt was not seeking to enter a regional war but was prepared to take measures to protect Saudi Arabia if requested by King Salman or Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He stressed that any Egyptian role would be defensive and sought parliamentary approval. Middle East Eye, citing Reuters, reported that parliament postponed the vote and would continue discussions Monday.
Saudi Arabia said it intercepted and destroyed four drones over Riyadh, the Eastern Province and the south. Residents of the capital briefly received warnings of a hostile aerial threat, while remote learning measures were extended in Riyadh and Diriyah. India’s embassy also urged its nationals to follow Saudi emergency instructions and seek shelter during alerts.
The Houthis have recently targeted Saudi oil facilities, transport hubs and Riyadh’s international airport. An attack near the airport on October 10 killed 13 people. The Houthis said Saudi strikes in Yemen over the past day had killed and wounded numerous people.
