A stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbajanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata killed 19 people, including four children, and injured 25 on Saturday evening, according to the latest official reporting.
The crush occurred at about 7:40 p.m. as rain fell and crowds gathered outside the pavilion. Kolkata Police said people waiting outside rushed inside for shelter. Reports citing police and witnesses said an announcement warning that the pandal could collapse if the crowd was not controlled added to the confusion, prompting a sudden surge. Authorities are investigating the precise sequence of events and possible failures in crowd management.
Police initially detained 12 organisers, security personnel and volunteers for questioning. Seven people, including two committee office-bearers, were subsequently arrested, and police registered a culpable homicide case. The pandal was closed to visitors and handed over to investigators and forensic teams. The West Bengal government also announced an independent investigation overseen by a sitting Calcutta High Court judge.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said surveillance footage would be reviewed and action taken against anyone found responsible. The state announced 2.5 million rupees and a government job for one relative of each person killed, along with 500,000 rupees and medical costs for each injured person. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced separate payments of 200,000 rupees to victims’ families and 50,000 rupees to those injured.
