Yemen’s Houthis launched missile attacks on the presidential compound and airport in Aden on Thursday and Friday as fighting intensified with the internationally recognised government and its Saudi-led backers.
Five missiles struck command centres used by Yemeni government and Saudi-led coalition forces inside the Al-Maashiq presidential compound on Thursday, according to government officials. Later accounts from Yemeni officials put the toll at five dead and 16 wounded, including guards and civilian employees. Prime Minister Shaya al-Zindani and other officials were unharmed, though two of his bodyguards were reportedly killed.
The Houthis said they had targeted a Saudi military operations headquarters and weapons depots. Saudi Arabia accused Iran of encouraging the escalation and continuing to arm and train the group.
On Friday, two missiles landed near the runway at Aden International Airport as a Yemenia Airways flight prepared to depart for Cairo. Information Minister Moammar Eryani said the missiles struck about 500 metres from the aircraft and that everyone aboard was safe. No casualties were reported. The Houthis said their intended targets were a military command headquarters and weapons depot at Badr Camp, next to the airport.
The attacks followed renewed combat after a years-long lull. Government forces, supported by Saudi air power, have been attempting to reverse recent Houthi territorial gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and reported advances in Marib province.
