French President Emmanuel Macron rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nunez’s resignation on Monday after nationwide protests over living costs, education and public services descended into rioting, looting and arson.

The Élysée said Macron acknowledged “failures in anticipation and intelligence” and kept Nunez in office to maintain continuity in the command of police and security forces. He instructed the minister to ensure transparency over failures in planning and intelligence and to introduce new operational methods for confronting violent rioters and looters.

Nunez said police had “lost control” in some major cities during Saturday’s unrest and acknowledged that the deployment of security forces had been insufficient. He said he offered to resign because he felt responsible for what happened.

The Interior Ministry reported nearly 2,400 arrests on Saturday and almost 1,000 police officers and gendarmes injured. Clashes and attempted looting continued in Paris and Marseille on Sunday. Protesters were also injured, Al Jazeera reported, including one demonstrator whose hand was blown off by a police crowd-control grenade.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu called for limited, localized curfews where needed and said a state of emergency remained an option. Marseille authorities banned gatherings and demonstrations for part of Monday, while students blocked the Louvre and Sciences Po in Paris in solidarity with the protests.
