Hurricane Trudy lashed parts of Mexico’s Pacific coast with heavy rain and strong winds Sunday, prompting warnings of potentially life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
A hurricane warning remained in effect from Manzanillo, in Colima state, to Cabo Corrientes, in Jalisco, while a tropical storm warning covered Las Islas Marías. The Mexican navy urged mariners and coastal residents to use extreme caution because of high waves, heavy rainfall and the danger of flooding and landslides.
The South China Morning Post, citing the U.S. National Hurricane Center, reported Trudy as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 kph), moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph). Other reports described the storm strengthening as it approached the coast before weakening to Category 1, reflecting changes in its intensity as it moved offshore.
Trudy’s center was forecast to remain near the Mexican coast through Sunday evening, then pass south of the Baja California Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday. A warning previously in effect farther southeast, from east of Punta San Telmo to Lázaro Cárdenas, was discontinued.
