Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines was critically injured Monday after she was struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, authorities said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as an apparent deliberate act but said the motive remained unknown. Victoria Police said officers were investigating whether the collision was intentional, while a national counterterrorism team involving police and intelligence agencies was activated to examine the case.
Police said a 43-year-old man was detained at the scene by members of the public and subsequently arrested. A knife was found and seized from inside the Toyota Land Cruiser involved in the incident, according to police. The suspect was expected to be interviewed in connection with the attack.
Haines, 65, was taken to hospital with critical injuries. She has represented her constituency in Australia’s federal Parliament as an independent since 2019.
“All of our thoughts are with Helen, her family, her friends, her team, and her community at this extremely difficult time,” Albanese told reporters, adding that he hoped for her full recovery. He also said it was too early to determine what motivated the incident.
