Australian independent MP Helen Haines was critically injured on Monday when an SUV struck her outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, authorities said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as an apparent deliberate act, while Victoria Police said they were investigating whether the collision was intentional. The motive remains unknown, and police have not established whether Haines and the driver knew each other.
Police said a white Toyota LandCruiser struck the 65-year-old lawmaker on Murphy Street at about 3:35 p.m. Haines suffered serious injuries, particularly to her lower body, and was airlifted to hospital.
A 43-year-old man was detained by bystanders after leaving the vehicle and was taken into police custody. Officers said a knife was found in his car. Counterterrorism investigators and the Australian Federal Police have joined the investigation, though officials said there was no continuing threat to the public and described the incident as isolated.
Albanese said Australians were praying for Haines’s recovery and praised her as a hardworking and respected parliamentarian. Her family thanked bystanders, medical workers and police for their swift response and asked that their privacy be respected.
Haines, a former nurse and midwife, entered Australia’s parliament in 2019 as an independent representative.
