US Vice President JD Vance said he would not endorse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election, one day after President Donald Trump publicly backed the incumbent.
“I’m not anti-endorsing him. I’m not pro-endorsing him. I’m not getting involved in Israeli elections,” Vance said Monday in an interview with journalist Mark Halperin. He added that his electoral focus was on American candidates and the US midterms.
Trump issued what he called his “complete and total endorsement” of Netanyahu on Sunday in a Truth Social post addressed to Israelis. Praising Netanyahu as “strong, brave, and brilliant,” Trump urged voters to re-elect him and linked his support to the two governments’ campaign against Iran. Netanyahu thanked Trump for his “tremendous support,” writing on X: “Together we will complete the mission.” France 24 reported that Netanyahu also aired a phone call in which Trump predicted his victory and suggested the two countries might again attack Iran together.
Gadi Eisenkot, Netanyahu’s main challenger, responded that Israelis alone would choose their next leader. He credited Trump’s contribution to Israeli security but said the US administration would have to work with whichever government voters selected.
Opinion polls cited by Deutsche Welle and The Irish Times indicate that neither Netanyahu’s right-wing and religious bloc nor the opposition is currently projected to win the 61 Knesset seats required to form a government.
