Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered preparations for a full closure of the occupied West Bank after two Palestinian gunmen attacked an Israeli military checkpoint near Hebron on Friday.
The Israel Defense Forces said two soldiers were killed and three others lightly wounded. Israeli forces killed both assailants following a prolonged exchange of fire at the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint. The military said the gunmen had an M16 rifle and a handgun and that their vehicle contained a large quantity of ammunition.
Netanyahu said the soldiers had prevented a larger attack and instructed the military to impose a cordon on Hebron and prepare to close the West Bank starting Friday. CNN reported that the timing, duration and extent of the wider closure remained unclear. Israeli forces also established roadblocks around Palestinian communities and continued searching for others who may have been connected to the attack.
During a visit to Hebron, Netanyahu said forces would enter the attackers’ neighborhood, evacuate residents, search homes, seize weapons and destroy what he described as terrorist infrastructure. He also said Israel had reviewed plans for a broader West Bank military operation but would decide later when to carry it out.
The shooting occurred four days before Israel’s national election.
