Trump Endorses Netanyahu Ahead of Israeli Election; Vance Declines to Follow

U.S. President Donald Trump endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election, backing his longtime ally ahead of Israel’s Oct. 27 vote and linking his support to their shared campaign against Iran.

In a Sunday post on Truth Social, Trump called Netanyahu a strong leader and partner in confronting Iran. He warned Israeli voters that choosing another prime minister could leave the United States to address regional threats without Israel’s help, writing that America would have to “do this work ourselves.” Netanyahu thanked Trump for his support and their work together.

Netanyahu is seeking a seventh term in the first Israeli national election since the Hamas-led attack of Oct. 7, 2023. Polling cited by the Forward indicates that neither Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition nor the opposition is assured of the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-member Knesset. Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot has emerged as Netanyahu’s main rival, while Avigdor Lieberman’s party could hold leverage in coalition negotiations.

Vice President JD Vance declined to join Trump’s endorsement. In an interview published Monday, Vance said he was “not getting involved in Israeli elections” and was focused on endorsing U.S. candidates in the midterms. He emphasized that he was neither endorsing nor opposing Netanyahu.
