Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale Friday in South Korea and more than 70 other countries and regions, seven years after Samsung introduced the Galaxy Fold.
The $1,999 device has a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display. In South Korea, it costs 3.29 million won ($2,300), more than 1 million won above Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8. Buyers interviewed by The Korea Herald cited Apple’s software and integration with products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods as reasons for choosing the Duo. Apple did not permit walk-in purchases in Korea, where preorder pickups were scheduled throughout launch day.
Initial inventory sold out quickly, with new U.S. Apple Store orders showing delivery dates in January 2027. Apple described demand as “extraordinary” but did not disclose production or sales figures. Cult of Mac estimated that sales could total at least 6 million units, drawing on earlier shipment forecasts from Omdia and Counterpoint; that figure has not been confirmed by Apple.
Wired reported that many third-party apps are not yet fully optimized for the Duo’s two displays, although several major apps have received updates. The phone replaces Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID sensor while retaining Dynamic Island functionality. Apple Pencil support is expected through a software update later this year, according to The Korea Herald.
