Apple’s iPhone Duo launches to long lines and tight supplies

Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale Friday amid long lines and limited availability at stores around the world. In-store inventory sold out quickly at many locations, while new online orders through Apple were generally showing delivery estimates in late January.

Apple had warned that only limited quantities would be available to walk-in customers. Availability varied by market: walk-in sales and online-order pickup were offered in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico and much of the UK and Europe, while stores in several Asian markets were initially set to serve only customers who had ordered online.

In the US, stores received roughly 50 to more than 200 units each, according to the Taipei Times. Some configurations sold out within minutes of opening. Apple’s store-pickup reservation system later resumed in the US, Canada and several other countries, although MacRumors reported that most stores had no same-day slots.

Apple is also limiting purchases to two iPhone Duo units per customer through its online stores. Engadget found the restriction in the US, Japan, Spain and the UK, regardless of the phones’ storage or color configurations.

Apple described demand as “nothing short of extraordinary.” Although late-January delivery estimates remain common, some customers have reported that previously scheduled shipments were moved forward to November or December. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model.
