Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term as Brazil’s president after defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s runoff, according to official results from the Superior Electoral Court.
Lula received about 51.8% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, a margin of roughly 4.4 million votes. The victory made Lula the first presidential candidate since Brazil’s return to direct elections to win a runoff after trailing in the first round.
Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would seek to annul the election, objecting to a Supreme Court decision that extended voting nationwide by two hours because of transport disruptions in some cities. Bolsonaro had also sought longer voting in some areas affected by heavy rain. An analysis cited by The Irish Times found that fewer than 35,000 ballots were cast during the additional period.
Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party subsequently recognized the official result while saying the concerns raised should be addressed through democratic debate. Bolsonaro also said he would comply with a federal police order to surrender his passports and denied planning to leave Brazil.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the election “rigged” without providing evidence. Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin rejected that claim as unfounded. Leaders from several countries congratulated Lula, while supporters celebrated in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
