Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro reportedly left Brazil for the United States after losing Sunday’s presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to Reuters and other media citing people close to Bolsonaro. His whereabouts have not been officially confirmed.
A senior Brazilian Federal Police official said there was no record of Bolsonaro leaving through a regular migration point. His passports were canceled on Tuesday after he missed a deadline to surrender them under a Supreme Court order barring him from leaving Brazil.
Bolsonaro said Monday that he had never intended to leave and described the order as intimidation. The Rio Times reported that Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued it in a sealed inquiry into suspected money laundering involving Bolsonaro and lawyer Willer Tomaz; both deny wrongdoing, and no charge against Bolsonaro has been made public.
Argentine authorities separately denied reports that Bolsonaro had entered Argentina. The country’s migration agency said checks of a private aircraft at Iguazú airport found no flight plan involving the Bolsonaro family, while President Javier Milei’s spokesman said Bolsonaro had not requested asylum.
Lula won the runoff with 51.79% of valid votes to Bolsonaro’s 48.21%, a margin of about 4.4 million votes. Bolsonaro has not conceded and has alleged electoral irregularities. His Liberal Party recognized Lula’s victory on Monday while requesting clarification over what it described as election-related social spending.
