Flávio Bolsonaro leaves Brazil after election defeat despite travel ban

publishers 18articles 24first reported 27 Oct, 16:24 UTCdeveloping since 27 Oct · 6 editions

Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro left Brazil with his family after losing Sunday’s presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to Brazilian media and Argentine authorities.

Argentina’s immigration agency said Bolsonaro, his wife and their two daughters entered the country through Misiones Province late Tuesday and departed about two hours later from Puerto Iguazú aboard a private jet. Reuters reported that the flight was bound for Ecuador, while other reports said Ecuador was a stopover en route to the United States. A senior U.S. official said Washington would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family.

Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports within 24 hours and barred him from leaving the country amid investigations that include allegations of money laundering and tax evasion, which he denies. Police said his passports had been cancelled, and authorities initially reported no official record of his departure from Brazil. Bolsonaro had said Monday that he intended to comply with the order and had never considered leaving the country.

Bolsonaro has not conceded the election, though his Liberal Party recognized Lula’s victory. His precise location remained unclear after the flight departed Argentina.

Argentine opposition lawmakers demanded explanations from President Javier Milei’s government about whether officials helped Bolsonaro transit the country. They called for Cabinet officials to appear before Congress and questioned why the aircraft was not delayed while Bolsonaro’s legal status was checked. No Brazilian arrest warrant had been issued for him.
