Flávio Bolsonaro arrives in Miami after leaving Brazil despite travel ban

Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami with his family after leaving Brazil despite a Supreme Court order barring him from traveling and requiring him to surrender his passports, according to multiple news reports.

Bolsonaro, the son of jailed former President Jair Bolsonaro, lost Sunday’s presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He is under investigation over alleged corruption and money laundering, accusations he denies, and is expected to lose parliamentary immunity when his Senate term ends in January 2027.

Argentina’s migration authority said Bolsonaro, his wife and two daughters entered the country with valid travel documents before boarding a private flight from Puerto Iguazú to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Reports said the family later reached Florida, where Bolsonaro met his brother Eduardo. Brazilian federal police had canceled his passports after he missed a deadline to surrender them.

The United States granted visas to Bolsonaro and his family. President Donald Trump told reporters he approved of Bolsonaro entering the country and called the family “fine people.” Trump also criticized the Brazilian election without providing evidence of wrongdoing.

Lula called Bolsonaro’s departure “shameful” and said he should have remained in Brazil to defend himself against the allegations. Bolsonaro had previously said he did not intend to leave and planned to organize opposition to Lula’s government. His former campaign manager said Bolsonaro had not disclosed any plan to flee.
