US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US government did not facilitate Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro’s departure from Brazil, as reports alleged that a former Mossad agent helped him travel through Argentina to Florida despite a court order barring him from leaving the country.

“We didn’t facilitate anything,” Rubio told reporters at a Group of 20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta. He said President Donald Trump had decided to allow Bolsonaro to enter the United States but that the government was not directly involved in the moves leading to his arrival near Miami on Wednesday.

CNN Brasil, citing a Brazilian security agency investigation, reported that an unidentified former Mossad officer who is now a naturalized US citizen accompanied Bolsonaro from Brasília to the Argentine border. Investigators reportedly used security-camera footage to identify two vans crossing the Tancredo Neves Bridge between Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú. Bolsonaro and the former agent allegedly traveled in one van, while Bolsonaro’s wife and two daughters used the other.

According to CNN Brasil, the family then boarded a Gulfstream G400 operated by Argentine airline Baires Fly, stopped in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and landed at Opa-locka Executive Airport near Miami. The operation was reportedly planned before Bolsonaro lost Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Rubio also spoke briefly with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in Atlanta. They agreed to meet again in the coming weeks amid diplomatic tensions between Washington and Brasília.
