Flávio Bolsonaro, Brazil’s defeated presidential candidate, said Friday that he fled to the United States because he was the victim of political “persecution,” days after losing the presidential runoff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro left Brazil with his wife and two daughters on Tuesday and arrived near Miami aboard a private jet on Wednesday after travelling through Argentina and Ecuador. His departure came after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the cancellation of his Brazilian passports and the surrender of his Italian passport amid an investigation into suspected money laundering and foreign-exchange evasion. Bolsonaro and lawyer Willer Tomaz, who is also under investigation, deny wrongdoing.
In an Instagram livestream, Bolsonaro said he and his wife decided to leave without telling anyone. He did not explain how he departed despite the court restrictions, but said he had been informed Monday that his passports were being revoked. According to El País, a flight manifest showed he crossed into Argentina using his Italian passport before boarding an aircraft in Puerto Iguazú.
Bolsonaro also alleged unspecified irregularities in the election and said he was willing to run for president again.
Brazil summoned Argentina’s chargé d’affaires on Thursday to seek information about the arrangements that enabled Bolsonaro’s transit through Argentina and whether President Javier Milei’s government played any role. Neither government issued a public statement after the meeting, and Brazil announced no further diplomatic measures.
