Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami with his family on Oct. 28 after losing Brazil’s presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva three days earlier.
Brazil’s electoral court declared Lula the winner with 51.79% of the vote, compared with Bolsonaro’s 48.21%, according to The Rio Times. Bolsonaro left Brazil by land for Argentina on Oct. 27, then traveled aboard a private charter that stopped in Guayaquil, Ecuador, before reaching Miami, accounts from BBC Verify and The Rio Times said.
The U.S. State Department told the BBC that visas would be issued to Bolsonaro and his family. President Donald Trump later said Bolsonaro could remain in the United States as long as he wanted, though Trump said he had no plans to meet him. Trump has questioned the Brazilian election and alleged without evidence that it was rigged.
Reuters reported that after landing, Bolsonaro declared himself Brazil’s rightful leader. Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered him to surrender his passports by noon on Oct. 27, The Rio Times reported, but he departed the country later that day.
Bolsonaro, a senator and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is under investigation in Brazil over alleged corruption, money laundering and tax evasion involving a sports-betting company and money allegedly received from banker Daniel Vorcaro. He denies wrongdoing and has not been convicted.
