Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia continued attacking Ukraine’s energy system after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to an immediate halt to strikes on energy infrastructure.
Trump declared the “energy ceasefire” on Sunday, but Zelensky said the announcement was “news to me.” He nevertheless backed the proposal, saying Ukraine would refrain from attacking Russian energy facilities if Russia did the same.
Zelensky said Russia struck six Ukrainian energy sites within hours of Trump’s announcement. Ukraine’s grid operator reported new power cuts in the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, while a strike destroyed power infrastructure in Izyum. Zelensky said 33 people were injured in attacks on energy facilities across the country.
Further Russian attacks on Tuesday targeted Kyiv and Kharkiv with 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones, according to Zelensky. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least three people were killed and 22 injured after strikes hit a residential building and power plants. Zelensky reported damage to 26 power facilities and four oil and gas sites, leaving at least 600,000 people without electricity.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday that Ukraine did not deserve the “respite” a ceasefire would provide. Zelensky said the continuing strikes showed Russia was unwilling to accept the U.S. proposal. Trump, asked Monday about the arrangement, said the two countries had agreed “because I said you agree.”
