Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought stronger European support at an EU summit in Brussels on Friday as relations between Kyiv and Washington deteriorated over strikes on Russian oil refineries and a U.S. diesel agreement with Moscow.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine would no longer observe President Donald Trump’s demand to halt refinery attacks after Russia continued striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Trump had blamed the Ukrainian strikes for rising fuel prices, a claim disputed by experts cited by the Kyiv Independent, and his administration threatened restrictions on intelligence and weapons support. Washington also eased some sanctions on Russia as part of an agreement allowing Russian diesel exports to the United States and other markets.
In an Oct. 15 Newsmax interview, Trump called Zelenskyy “not a good guy for us to deal with” and said he was “not a big fan” of the Ukrainian leader. Trump also said negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin was easier than dealing with Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy told reporters he had received “support and only support” from European leaders. He asked Brussels for an additional €70 billion to help fund Ukraine’s war effort next year, according to France 24. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten criticized Trump’s language and said Europe should show unconditional support for Kyiv, though he did not expect leaders to commit to specific new aid at Friday’s meeting.
Ukraine has also experienced disruptions to its U.S.-provided Starlink access, which reportedly hindered some military operations against Russian bombardments.
