Elon Musk said Monday that he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, though he did not explain how the distribution would work.
“This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote on X. Based on approximately 72 million U.S. residents under age 18 and a reported SpaceX share price of $146.03, the proposed gift would be worth about $10.5 billion. CNBC reported that Musk owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, rising to 6.4 billion when unvested awards and stock options are included.
The pledge followed Anthropic’s announcement that, subject to shareholder approval, it would commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund. The AI company said the fund could support large donations to nonprofits, direct distributions to certain groups, or efforts addressing job disruption and displacement caused by artificial intelligence. Anthropic’s board could add further shares as the company’s valuation increases.
Responding Sunday to Anthropic’s announcement, Musk recommended giving shares “directly to the public” and said that was what he intended to do. SpaceX did not immediately provide additional details in response to media inquiries.
